Clients come to me for a wide range of issues. Some people are struggling with feeling that they are not living the life they once had or that there is something more.
This deficit can be labelled as depression. A state of low mood, shadowed by a deep sensation that there is something missing. Unlike anxiety which is an additional feeling, depression will subtract past feelings of joy and contentment. Removing motivation, for things that once felt good and meaningful, and will now be dull and lifeless.
Restoring an individuals vitality for life is not like solving an equation. There is no single answer to how to relieve depression. Despite many books and self help resources on the subject. From my experience relief from depression comes from an extensive enquiry in to a multifaceted problem built up over years, if not generations.
Starting to unravel the knot needs patience and compassion.
There is a thread that seems to link depressive episodes and that is the theme of connection. This maybe connection with family, loved ones or connections you have with yourself or identity. Losing a connection or wanting a deeper connection. Just as we are not aware of the air we breathe until it’s no longer there, connections are as important as air.
As mammals, connection to people, places and things are imbedded within our DNA. Who we were in one location maybe different when we move somewhere new or take on a different role. Life in general with change weather you like it or not and with every element there is adaption to the new you and the you that has been lost.
In therapy we start to investigate who you are. Rule out any organic causes through physiological constrains or lifestyle choices. Travel back to the seeds of the depression. Take away any obstructive limiting beliefs and cultivate the optimal environment to allow your natural vitality to guide you to your fullest potential.
The connection of the therapeutic relationship will allow you to do this work with the support that is required to strengthen and revitalise the areas that need your attention whilst providing the holding until you are ready to evolve. Take the first step and reach out.
